Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is concerned about mail-in ballots being counted on time.
The National Association of Secretaries of State wrote to the Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Wednesday.
The group said after changes to first-class delivery standards, election officials in nearly every state have received dozens, sometimes hundreds of ballots well after Election Day, even though they were postmarked in time.
Bellows said the Postal Service is prioritizing election mail around Election Day, but she wants the agency to act sooner.
“We’re asking them to prioritize election mail more fully, starting now because ballots will be going out to voters in Maine, will be available Oct. 7, so that’s right around the corner,” Bellows said. “We hope they will take swift action.”
