A woman and a dog died as the result of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Augusta on Friday.
At around 3:09 p.m., southbound traffic had stopped because of a lane closure in a construction zone near mile marker 113, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.
As traffic was stopped, a pickup truck rear-ended an SUV, causing a chain reaction and a five-vehicle crash. A female passenger in the SUV, who has not been identified, was struck in the initial crash.
The woman, along with a dog that had been in the vehicle, died at the scene of the crash.
According to Moss, a number of people involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
All five vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene.
Traffic had been diverted off Exit 113 while the southbound lanes remained closed as officials responded to the crash. As of 5:50 p.m., all of the lanes were opened.
The crash remains under investigation. More information will be made available on Saturday, Moss said.
