These raccoons captured in BDN contributor Allie Ladd’s recent video likely are from the same litter. They are eating apples on a ridge
Moms give birth to up to six babies in a den she makes in a hollowed area of a tree. They like deciduous forests, farm fields, wetlands and suburban areas.
Raccoons come out mostly at night. They prefer foods they fish out of the water such as clams, fish, crayfish, frogs and snails, but they will eat anything from dead animals to plants to human garbage, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
These animals hear well and have very dexterous toes on their front paws that help them manipulate food.
Although they are nocturnal, seeing raccoons during the daytime does not mean they are ill, even though the animals are prone to getting rabies and dog distemper. The state treats some areas with rabies vaccines to cut down on the number of sick raccoons.
Raccoons likely will den during the coldest temperatures of winter, but otherwise they are active year-round, the DIF&W said.
