It’s the third week of September, fall foliage is starting to peek out in some places as overnight temperatures become consistently cooler.
According to this week’s fall foliage report, hints of gold, orange and red are present across less than 30 percent of Maine. The majority of the foliage changes are happening throughout eastern Aroostook County and northern Penobscot County, with some changes in western Maine, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
Northern Maine tends to reach peak conditions between the last week of September and the first week of October. Peak conditions for the rest of the state tend to hit by mid-October.
“With the autumn equinox on Sunday, September 22, we bid farewell to summer and welcome cooler, fall-like temperatures, which will accelerate the vibrant color transformation across Maine’s stunning landscape,” Gale Ross, Maine foliage spokesperson said on Wednesday.
