Five people have been sickened from eating eggs contaminated with salmonella from an Orland farm.
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry on Thursday issued a recall for eggs from Rainbow Farm.
That comes after the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention determined at least five people became sick with salmonellosis after eating eggs from Rainbow Farm.
Rainbow Farm has stopped the production and distribution of eggs to allow for testing, cleaning and potential culling, according to the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
Anyone who has bought Rainbow Farm eggs should dispose of them or return them for a refund. The eggs are sold at farmers markets in Bar Harbor, Blue Hill, Northeast Harbor and Stonington, as well as on FarmDrop, an online marketplace, the agriculture department said.
Symptoms of salmonellosis infection include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and headaches, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They typically set in six hours to six days of exposure and may last up to a week.
More serious infections are possible for older adults, infants and people with weakened immune systems.
