As a former U.S. Navy veteran and a longtime merchant mariner, my job has taken me all over the world. In the 40-year span, I have worked aboard ships. I am proud to have served in defense of our country, have supported our troops overseas and have been a small cog in the great engine of international commerce. During this time, I have learned how important it is to have a strong military and a vibrant maritime presence on the oceans worldwide.
Keeping sea lanes free and projecting a strong presence around the world are vital to maintaining our economy, our leadership and in keeping stability in an ever-changing and chaotic world. Overseas alliances such as NATO are key to holding the line against our adversaries.
Donald Trump who speaks of “Making America Great Again” apparently has no strategic vision and speaks of isolationism, abdicating world leadership, disavowing allies and alliances, and embracing dictators. I believe his reckless actions and rhetoric imperil our diplomatic relations and overseas assets.
Add to this Project 2025’s plan to dismantle the Jones Act, the “glue” which helps to hold the U.S. Merchant Marine together. This law protects U.S. coastwise shipping from foreign competition. This is certainly no formula for greatness.
Kamala Harris on the other hand, has an understanding of our critical role in the free world. She knows the importance of allies, of keeping a strong military and a strong Merchant Marine. She is also a supporter of the maritime unions that represent many U.S. Merchant Mariners. For me the choice is clear, my vote will go to Harris this fall.
