Imagine my surprise as a Mainer when last week it was announced that our representative to Congress from the First District voted in opposition to deporting illegal immigrants convicted of a sex offense. I don’t believe this reflects the desires of the citizens of the First District and that is exactly why I am running against her in November.
But how could she possibly know what we think? She rarely holds town halls or similar events to let us know what issues are being discussed in Washington D.C., and most importantly, she holds a paucity of events to find out how we the people think she should vote on those issues.
Another example of this lack of understanding of our concerns occurred in a committee hearing of the U.S. Congress on June 12. During that speech, she advocated for money to bus more migrants to Maine and paying for their housing and other expenses while here. We don’t need any more people in Maine that cannot make ends meet. What we need is more affordable housing for Mainers coupled with good-paying jobs, all the result of an attractive business environment. These are achievable only if we change how we’re doing business and that means changing our leadership at the state and federal level.
It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. On Nov. 5, let’s return to sanity by changing who we are electing to these positions.
