A New Hampshire man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a Maine man will spend 16 years behind bars.
Daniel Lafrenier, 33, of Rochester, New Hampshire, shot of Berwick in the head in January 2023.
Lafrenier shot and killed Forest after Lafrenier’s mother called and claimed she had been in an argument with Forest about missing clothing, according to the Portland Press Herald. She and Forest were staying at the same house in Berwick.
The Press Herald reported their argument was already over when Lafrenier arrived with a loaded gun. He pointed it at Forest and then the gun went off.
In a GoFundMe page, Forest was described as hard working, loyal and willing to always tell others how much he loved them. He left behind four children.
Court documents show there could be another suspect but so far, Lafrenier is the only person known to be charged.
Prosecutors reduced the murder charge to manslaughter.
Lafrenier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and illegally possessing a firearm in June.
Lafrenier was sentenced to 23 years with all but 16 suspended, according to the Press Herald. He will have to serve the full sentence if he violates the terms of his four years of probation once he’s released.
