The head of the civil service Simon Case has announced he will resign at the end of the year.
Mr Case, 45, who as cabinet secretary is the UK’s most senior civil servant, has served in the top position since September 2020.
An internal Whitehall email seen by Sky News says Mr Case has issued a message to colleagues confirming his departure, and that a job advert to replace him will go up soon.
His resignation letter said: “As many of you know, I have been undergoing medical treatment for a neurological condition over the last 18 months and, whilst the spirit remains willing, the body is not.
“It is a shame that I feel I have to spell this out, but my decision is solely to do with my health and nothing to do with anything else.”
