It is now more than one year since the killing of almost 1,200 Israelis by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. As a result, there are now also more than 42,000 Palestinians (likely a gross undercount) who have been killed by the Israeli military and thousands more Palestinians who have been seized and are being held in Israeli jails.
This is not bringing the conflict any closer to an end, or, as Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan of “Democracy Now” put it, “Israel cannot bomb its way to peace.” By supplying the Israeli military with more weapons, our government is helping to maintain the conflict and contributing to the death of many more Palestinians and Israelis.
Instead, we should be on the side of peace, not on the side of an Israeli government that seems bound and determined to kill Palestinians and innocent people in any country (Lebanon, Iran) that it sees as a threat. Israelis want to be safe and secure, but I believe their government and military are going about it the wrong way.
We can support both Palestinians and Israelis best by getting Congress and President Joe Biden to stop sending more weapons to Israel and instead demanding an immediate and permanent cease-fire and a release of all those being held.
