Donald Trump campaign signs that went missing from the roadside in front of the Piscataquis County Democratic headquarters in Dover-Foxcroft this week were found in a stack behind the office , prompting questions about whether local party officials had broken the law.
In a video published by The Maine Wire, a woman filmed her discovery of the signs, which she says she installed outside the Democratic office two days in a row.
“And since it’s a felony to remove signs, or so I’ve been told, and we have to be tolerant, I came to check and see if we knew where they were,” she says in the video, before walking to the back of the office where a stack of several signs, the top one reading “Trump Low Prices, Kamala High Prices,” can be seen lying on the ground.
Reached through the Pisquataquis County Republicans, the woman declined an interview with the BDN.
Photos posted to the Piscataquis County Republicans’ Facebook page show the front of the Democratic headquarters with the signs installed and then missing.
Piscataquis County Democrats acknowledged in a Facebook post that the signs had been removed and put behind their building but said it wasn’t them and urged fellow Democrats not to do it.
The office did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
The Dover-Foxcroft Police Department posted to Facebook that they had received several complaints about the signs being removed, but “it was requested no action be taken.”
The department reminded people that removing signs is against Maine law, and that the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road, along with traffic islands, are part of the easement of the roadway and therefore public space.
Maine law allows campaign signs to be placed in such spaces by anyone.
The Bangor Daily News was not immediately able to reach someone at the department with knowledge of the incident.
