LISBON, Maine — Lisbon Schools Superintendent Richard Green says seven students have been suspended from the Lisbon High School football team due to an alleged hazing incident.
Last Friday, an email was sent out to Lisbon parents by the school’s athletic director.
“Due to the ongoing investigation at Lisbon High School, the Lisbon School Department has made the determination to cancel all football activities until further notice,” the letter read.
Green says that the players suspended from the team have not been suspended from school and will be able to continue their education, but some of the students have been penalized.
Although the team as a whole is still under suspension, Green says that without these seven players, the team of 30-plus students could start playing again when and if the ban is lifted.
Lisbon’s game Friday against Freeport, and last week’s game against Mountain Valley, have been forfeited.
The school department and Lisbon Police Department are both conducting their own investigations into the alleged hazing.
Lisbon Police Chief Ryan McGee says that charges are being considered, and they will be discussing the situation with the Maine district attorney’s office in the days to come.
McGee says that the police criminal investigation is different from the school’s independent investigation, and they are on two completely separate tracks. Further information is not being released because juveniles are involved.
No specific details about the alleged hazing have been released.
