A Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives is accusing the government of controlling the weather.
Republican Wendy Lee MacDowell of Augusta believes the government is manufacturing “weaponized weather” in order to punish voters in conservative states and seize land for lithium mining, according to the Waterville Morning Sentinel.
MacDowell posted the statements on social media days after Hurricane Helene ripped through the South, killing more than 200 people.
She’s spreading a common conspiracy theory that weather is controlled by a research program called HAARP at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
In the past, the Morning Sentinel reported MacDowell has also posted that all aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency is a loan that hurricane victims have to pay back.
Federal and state officials have repeatedly stated those claims are false.
