Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, flu-like symptoms, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those symptoms are usually mild, but can become more severe if the infection spreads beyond the intestine.
The onset of symptoms of intestinal listeria infection usually begins within 24 hours of eating contaminated food and symptoms can last up to three days. Symptoms of listeria infection beyond the intestine usually become noticeable within two weeks of eating contaminated food.
