Kristin Cavallari is using her divorce from Jay Cutler to show others that they can get to a better place with their ex after parting ways.
“My heart broke in my marriage. And even though I’m the one that walked away, it was not what I wanted,” Cavallari, 37, revealed on the Tuesday, October 22, episode of her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast. “It was not what I had envisioned and I really tried everything I could.”
Cavallari said it was “heartbreaking” when she tried her best and it still wasn’t enough.
“You just can’t get there. And I would say my heart was broken for years in my marriage,” she noted. “Again, I’m not talking s—- about Jay at all. I’m really not. I’ve publicly said some things at first. And now I don’t really talk about him at all.”
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s Ups and Downs Through the Years
The episode, which was recorded before Cutler’s recent DUI arrest, offered an update on where the former couple stands now.
“I will say we are in the best place that we’ve been in. It’s been four and a half years and it took four years,” Cavallari, who shares kids Camden, 11, Jaxon, 10, and Saylor, 8, with Cutler, 41, admitted. “It took four years. But things are really good with us now, so much so that we even sat together at one of [our son] Camden’s basketball games recently.”
She concluded: “And that makes me so happy because, honestly, I never thought that we would get there. I really didn’t. If I tell you that Jay and I can get there, anyone can get there. Take my word on that. I wish I could give you guys all the stories, but I can’t.”
Cavallari announced her split from Cutler in April 2020 after seven years of marriage.
“We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of,” their joint statement read at the time. “This is just the situation of two people growing apart.”

The former reality star subsequently stood by her decision to move on.
“The scariest thing that I’ve ever done is get a divorce. But it’s been the best thing that I’ve ever done and that has really jump-started my journey on self-love and figuring out who I am now,” Cavallari explained during an episode of “The School of Greatness” podcast in June 2022.
“My kids have inspired me to become the best version of myself,” she added. “I can only be as good to my kids as I am to myself. If I am empty, I have nothing to give them. Being able to be energized and love myself so I can love on my kids — and support them and encourage them — that’s the most important thing.”
Before Cavallari’s newest insight into her dynamic with Cutler, the former football player made headlines when he was arrested on Thursday, October 17, after he allegedly rear-ended another vehicle in Franklin, Tennessee. He was booked for a DUI and posted bond several hours later before being released. According to TMZ, Cutler was reportedly also charged with failure to exercise due care, violation of implied consent law and possession of a handgun while under the influence.
Jay Cutler’s Biggest Controversies Through the Years
Cutler has not yet publicly addressed the arrest. According to legal documents obtained by Us Weekly, Cutler allegedly tried to flee the scene and offered the other driver $2,000 not to call the police. He later refused a field sobriety test once the authorities arrived on the scene.
“Really quickly, just before we get into the episode, I wanted to hop on here and just let you guys know that this episode was recorded right before a very public incident happened last week with my ex-husband,” Cavallari explained on Tuesday’s podcast. “Just keep that in mind as you’re listening.”
Cavallari clarified that she would not be addressing Cutler‘s situation any further, adding, “I will not be commenting on what happened. I do, of course, wish Jay nothing but the best, and I do hope that he gets the help that he needs. But that’s the only thing that I will be saying about it publicly.”
