Voters like me who are aged 50-plus are counting on Social Security to help pay their bills in retirement. We’ve worked hard and paid into Social Security, so it’s only fair for us to expect to get the money we’ve earned.
I hope congressional candidates and all voters keep Social Security in mind during this election season. No matter your age, a cut to Social Security can have serious negative effects. If Washington doesn’t take action, in 10 years Social Security could be cut by 20 percent. This would undoubtedly be detrimental to the 360,000 Mainers who currently collect Social Security, as well as to future generations.
It’s time for Congress to come together and agree on a solution to fix the Social Security shortfall. Let’s work together and ask candidates important questions this election season such as, do you see a path in Congress for a bipartisan solution to protect Social Security?
