Celebrities are mourning the loss of former One Direction band member Liam Payne.
News broke on Wednesday, October 16, that Payne died at age 31 due to sustaining injuries after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Payne fell from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, Us Weekly confirmed at the time.
Payne rose to stardom in 2008 when he appeared on the British series The X Factor. Despite his elimination, he returned in 2010 and was recruited to be a member of the boy band One Direction. The group, which was created by Simon Cowell, included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik in addition to Payne. The band released several hit tracks including “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Story of My Life.”
Payne was the father of son Bear, whom he welcomed in March 2017 with ex Cheryl Cole.

Mendes paused his Friday, October 18, concert at the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn, New York to tell the audience the news of Payne’s death felt “completely devastating.”
Per social media footage, Mendes told the crowd, “I got to meet Liam a couple of times, and he was a beautiful soul and his eyes gleamed, it was beautiful. It’s about grieving those we miss with tears and it’s also about celebrating them and who they were and what they left in this world and I just want to take a second to send so much love to him wherever he is up there. Liam, we love you. The world is crying for you, brother, and we’re all praying for your son and your family. I miss you. This one’s for you tonight, Liam, from all of us.”

The former One Direction mentor and former member of British boy band Take That paid tribute to Payne on social media. “How to make sense of the Liam Payne tragedy?” Williams wrote in a lengthy post made via Instagram. “Obviously, my first feelings towards his passing were like everyone else. Shock, sadness and confusion. And to be honest as I write these words that’s where I still am.”
In his post, he reminisced about acting as One Direction’s mentor on The X Factor, saying, “I use the word mentored in inverted brackets cos I hardly did anything to be honest. I just hung out with them. They were all cheeky and lovely.” He added, “Liam’s trials and tribulations were very similar to mine, so it made sense to reach out and offer what I could. So I did.”
