Patrick Ta finally addressed the price of his new Eyeshadow Duos.
Ta, 32, took to TikTok on Saturday, October 26, to discuss the unhappy chatter surrounding his Major Dimension Eye Illusion Eyeshadow Duos, which retail for $42. “These are not your normal eyeshadows,” he said, explaining that the formula is made in Italy and called a “slurry,” which is baked instead of pressed and features “100% pearl” mixed in the powder, and no “filler” pigments.
“I have yet to be able to find a pearl that looks like this, applies like this [and] stays like this when you put it on,” he continued. Ta also shared that he loves putting them over a matte shadow.
Elsewhere in the video, Ta listed examples of other slurry shadows on the market that are priced similarly, including the Too Faced Disco Crush High Shine Glitter Eye + Face Sparkle, which retails for $30 and is a single shade, the MAC Dazzle Shadow Extreme ($30 per shadow) and the Hourglass Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow ($30.) He also noted that none of the other products came with a mirror, but his does, which adds to the price.

Ta then demonstrated just how sparkly his pigment is by swatching it on the back of his hand. “[The] camera does not show how amazing these are in person,” he gushed. “As an artist, I want the quality of my products to be the best you can get out there. This eyeshadow will stand the test of time.”
Fans were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section. “I absolutely cannot afford these, but I understand the price & understand that just bc I can’t afford it doesn’t mean it’s overpriced,” one wrote. second agreed: “The girls who get it, get it.”
A third fan praised Ta for being so transparent, “Thank you explaining the ‘why’ and being kind with your delivery! This is Exceptional!!!”
Other makeup artists, including Mikayla Nogueira and Jeffree Star, reviewed Ta’s shadows as well and had mixed opinions on the powder.

Star, 38, weighed in on the conversation on Thursday, October 24. “I know a lot of people are upset about [the price of Patrick’s Eyeshdaow Duos],” he said. “I have been formulating highlighters and these types of products in Italy for years now. I personally know the lab that made this.”
Star continued, sharing that the process is “really crazy” to create the pearly smooth formula. “This is not a traditional pan. This is a baked, different type of formula. There’s no filler in here. This is pure pigment. This is pure diamonds,” he said, testing out the product. Adding: “Patrick Ta is a boujee, luxury brand.”

“‘Could it be chopped down a few dollars?’ Yes,” Star admitted. “I know how much it costs to make a formula like this, and sadly, for the customer, it’s not cheap and that’s why we have to drive up the price.” Star compared Patrick’s slurry to his own highlighter, made from the same Italian lab, and noted that his price point is similar to Ta’s at $50.
“I’m not here to be Patrick Ta’s savior,” Star continued. “There’s people saying there’s an Elf dupe. Show me it.”
Nogueira, 26, compared Ta’s Eyeshadow Duos to the e.l.f. Cosmetics Fine as Fleck Glitter Eyeshadows ($6) via TikTok on Thursday. (It’s important to note that Nogueira has a partnership with e.l.f.)
“$42 for two eyeshadows is insane,” Nogueira said as she reached for the e.l.f. glitter shadow, which does not feature pearl or a baked powder, and instead a micro glitter and pressed shadow. “These look pretty damn similar.” Nogueira applied the glitter to her lids to prove how sparkly they are, “I mean, hello? These are insane. They absolutely ate. Elf does it again.”
