BEALS — Downeast Institute, the easternmost marine research laboratory in the US focused on applied research for commercially important shellfish species, continues to expand its staff.
Jaquan High has been hired as a research scientist and will manage DEI’s Ocean Acidification Laboratory. He is responsible for overseeing all internal and external research conducted in the lab.
High’s most recent research centered on mechanisms and geochemical effects of ocean alkalinity enhancement in estuarine sediments. In June he earned his M.S. degree in Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences from Oregon State University. High earned his B.S. degree in geology at the University of South Carolina.
DEI conducts critical research on shellfish species along Maine’s coast, supporting fishermen and the state’s coastal economy. For over 30 years, DEI has been at the forefront of generating new knowledge about the marine environment and supplying commercially important shellfish seed for harvesters, aquaculturists, and other entrepreneurs. As the easternmost marine field station in the US, DEI’s expertise extends beyond Maine, offering valuable opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange with scientists nationwide.
