ORONO – The University of Maine hockey team’s power play continued to produce on Saturday night.
After scoring twice on three attempts in Friday night’s 5-0 win over Merrimack College, UMaine added three more on Saturday night en route to a 6-0 victory over the Warriors.
The Black Bears, ranked sixth in one national poll and seventh in another, improved to 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Hockey East while Merrimack College fell to 1-5-1 and 0-3-1 in league play.
Junior left wing Thomas Freel, who entered the game tied for the national lead in power play goals with four, scored two more power play goals and one of senior center Harrison Scott’s two goals came with the man advantage.
Sophomore right wing Charlie Russell and graduate student right wing Ross Mitton scored the other goals.
Mitton scored what proved to be the game-winner just 17 seconds into the game.
Brandon Holt fired the puck into the Merrimack zone and it came off the boards behind the goal to Mitton at the extended goal line to the left of Merrimack goalie Nils Wallstrom and he one-timed the puck past the goalie from an acute angle.
Albin Boija and Patriks Berzins combined on the 17-save shutout in net.
