The Camden Hills boys soccer team, seeded No. 1 in the North, showed its toughness by topping third-seed South champion Scarborough 1-0 on penalty kicks to win the Class A state championship at McMann Field in Bath on Saturday.
In girls Class D action, third-seeded North champion Penobscot Valley of Howland defeated No. 1 South seed Buckfield 2-0 to capture its second straight state crown.
In boys Class D play, No. 1 South seed Richmond edged No. 3 North seed Fort Fairfield 3-2 to take home the gold ball.
The Class A boys final saw a scoreless game through regulation and two 15-minute overtimes, according to Varsity Maine and related publications. Camden Hills junior Luke Tobias scored the winning goal in the first round of penalty kicks, giving the Windjammers a 5-3 edge and cementing the 1-0 win.
Connor Middleton, Mac Pierce, Colby Bennett and Boston Enggass also scored penalty kicks for Camden Hills.
Scarborough’s Denver Bachman missed the second penalty kick, shooting wide right against Camden Hills goalkeeper Brian Leonard.
Camden Hills finished the season with a 16-1-1 record and captured its first Class A state crown. Scarborough finished with a 15-2-1 record.
In the Class D girls game, the PVHS Howlers (16-2) repeated as state champions on the strength of goals by Rylee Moulton and Lila Cummings and a stifling defense.
Howlers goalkeeper Brooklynn Raymond finished with nine saves in a strong performance.
Buckfield finished the season with a 15-2 record.
In the Class D boys game, Gavin Grover’s goal with 24 seconds left in the game broke the 2-2 tie and cemented the win for Richmond (16-1). Ben Fournier scored two goals for the top-seeded Bobcats.
Fort Fairfield (14-3-1) fought hard and was paced by Cayden Ala’s two goals in the second half.
