University of Maine guard Kellen Tynes sank two free throws with 21 seconds left in the game and the Black Bears held on to defeat Brown University 69-67 in a basketball matchup in Providence, RI on Sunday.
Tynes, a 6-foot-3 graduate student guard, finished with 12 points, none bigger than the foul shots that led to the win, improving UMaine’s record to 2-1.
Junior guard Jaden Clayton led UMaine with 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field. Senior guard AJ Lopez added 16 points and a blocked shot for the Black Bears. Tynes had 3 steals to go with his late-game heroics.
Brown (0-2) was led by Kino Lilly Jr.’s 18 points. Landon Lewis added 15 and Aaron Cooley finished with 13 points.
The game was a back-and-forth duel throughout with 9 lead changes.
UMaine led 33-29 at the half. Brown briefly retook the lead in the second half before the Black Bears jumped back in front, leading by as many as six points.
UMaine held the lead until the 7:36 mark in the second half when Brown grabbed it back on a three-pointer.
The battle lasted down the stretch until Tynes settled it.
UMaine remains on the road as they travel to Quinnipiac for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
