One person is dead after a Sunday night fire at a Bangor homeless encampment.
The fire broke out inside a tent at the encampment, known locally as Camp Hope and Tent City, about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to CBS affiliate WABI.
Authorities haven’t released the identity of the victim or any other details about the death. The Bangor Police Department referred questions to the Maine fire marshal’s office, which is investigating the death.
Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, which oversees the fire marshal’s office, confirmed investigators worked the scene Sunday night but had no additional information to release early Monday morning. More information is expected to be released later in the day.
The fire death comes as the city of Bangor plans to shutter the encampment, which ballooned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, more than 70 people call the encampment off Texas Avenue home. It’s unclear what will happen to the people living there, but outreach workers hope to connect them to resources and housing before the camp closes on Dec. 31.
