I find it more than curious to witness the reaction of the coastal elites to the election of Donald Trump. After their harangue on “democracy” throughout the campaign and following their own avoidance of the standard democratic process of choosing a candidate, some of them now decry the overwhelming democratic result of the Republicans winning the national popular vote, the Electoral College, the Senate and the House. To state the obvious, isn’t that pretty democratic?
But there’s more to the left’s electoral response that I find troubling. There is a sky-is-falling despair about the quality of life that will now be experienced in our daily lives under a conservative government. To that complaint, I say get a grip. Conservatives have experienced what I see as four years of runaway inflation, open borders, soft-on-crime policies and woke cultural infusion — all under the leadership of a declining president. And, somehow, we were expected to just suck it up and accept all this from a president who promised unity.
Now, to top it off, those of us (the national majority I might add) who voted for Trump must now suffer the epic hubris of being labeled as ” fascists” and ” garbage.” Personally, I take great umbrage over this. Like many others in the “garbage” category, I am a loving family man, dedicated career professional, active community volunteer, lifelong sportsman, faithful Christian and proud Maine citizen. However, because I voted for Trump I am garbage?
Isn’t it time for a bridge to a respectful political coexistence?
