The Centers for Disease Control warned consumers about an E. coli outbreak associated with organic carrots that has killed one person and hospitalized 15 others in 18 states. A total of 39 people have been affected thus far.
New York, Minnesota and Washington were the states with the most cases. Maine has not reported any cases.
The baby and whole organic carrots come from Grimmway Farms, which issued a recall for the affected root vegetable. They are no longer being sold in stores, but could still be in people’s homes.
The baby organic carrots would carry a best used date of Sept. 11 through Nov. 12, 2024, and would carry one of the following brands: 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Wholesome Pantry.
The whole organic carrots do not carry a best-used-by date but were in the stores from Aug. 14 through Oct. 23, 2024, under the brands 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Wholesome Pantry.
Symptoms associated with an E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. They stare from three to four days after the bacteria is swallowed. Most people recover without treatment within a week, the CDC said.
It is possible to develop a serious kidney condition that will require hospitalization.
