PORTLAND — Highlighting its commitment and support of the communities it serves that goes well beyond financial services, Town & Country Federal Credit Union welcomed 20 area non-profits for its annual “Better Neighbor Fund” reception on Wednesday evening, Nov. 13. The special reception, which encourages non-profit organizations to connect with each other, was held at the credit union’s Forest Avenue Branch in Portland.
The credit union announced the eight non-profits from Cumberland and York Counties that received the most votes through a public vote during October. Grants totaling $25,000 were awarded, with amounts ranging from $2,000-$5,000 to those non-profits. The credit union also announced and distributed additional contributions of $100 each to the 12 other non-profits that did not finish in the top 8 in votes.
The Town & Country ‘Better Neighbor Fund’ event continues the credit union’s long-standing focus highlighting the importance that its neighbors in the non-profit community play in making neighborhoods strong and vibrant. In his remarks to attendees, David Libby, president and CEO of Town & Country, reinforced the importance of “being neighborly” through support and kindness. “In a world that often feels fast-paced and disconnected, the simple act of being a good neighbor holds incredible value. We recognize the power of a community where neighbors look out for each other, lend a hand when someone is in need, and create an environment of warmth and care. It’s the small gestures — smiling at someone as you pass them by, offering to help carry groceries, or just taking the time to check in — that turns a neighborhood into a true community. We believe It is our hope that these grants will again enable our recipients to make a difference in ways that enhance and strengthen our neighborhoods and enrich where we live. This is a shining example of our ‘local helping local’ philosophy.”
The eight non-profits receiving grants and where they are headquartered are as follows:
$5,000 grant recipients –
• Summer Camp for Girls in Bridgton
• Ruth’s Reusable Resources in Portland
• A House for ME in Kittery
$2,000 grant recipients –
• Pine Tree Society in Scarborough
• Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland in Westbrook
• Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick
• Portland Media Center in Portland
• Habitat for Humanity of York County in Kennebunk
With these grants, Town & Country surpassed the $375,000 milestone in Better Neighbor Fund grants supporting nearly 140 different community programs since it launched this groundbreaking initiative in 2010.
