Liam Payne was laid to rest following his untimely death at age 31.
The singer’s famous friends and family attended a private funeral hosted in Amersham, England, on Wednesday, November 20. Payne’s former One Direction bandmates — Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan — were photographed walking into the somber event, along with the late singer’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
Payne died on October 16 following a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina, Us Weekly previously confirmed.
Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti said that Payne suffered “serious injuries” that first responders were unable to treat by the time they arrived on the scene at CasaSur Palermo Hotel. According to Payne’s preliminary autopsy report, he died from multiple injuries involving “internal and external hemorrhage” and suffered “multiple traumas” that contributed to his death.
The Forensic Medical Corps doctors documented 25 injuries, including “cranioencephalic injuries [that] were severe enough to cause death.” Officials noted that hemorrhages in Payne’s skull, chest, abdomen and limbs “contributed to the mechanism of death.”
ABC News subsequently reported that a partial autopsy revealed Payne had “pink cocaine” — a recreational drug that typically consists of a mixture of methamphetamine, ketamine and MDMA — as well as cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack in his system prior to his death.
Payne got his start on the U.K. edition of The X Factor in 2010, where he formed One Direction with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson. The boy band released five studio albums from 2011 to 2015 and went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016 following Malik’s exit the year prior. Like his former bandmates, Payne went on to pursue a solo career, releasing his first album, LP1, in 2019.
