AUGUSTA – In recognition of the past, present, and future contributions and service of Maine Wing Civil Air Patrol to the state and nation, Gov. Janet Mills has declared Dec. 1, 2024 as Civil Air Patrol Day in Maine.
Civil Air Patrol was founded on Dec. 1, 1941, to organize and mobilize civilian aviation resources for national defense and became the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force in 1948. From the earliest days of coastal patrol during WWII through the present, Maine Wing has continuously served the people of Maine for 83 years.
Today, the 354 volunteer members of Maine Wing provide critical support during natural disasters and other emergencies, provide the youth and educators of the state with aerospace education programs, develop future leaders through the cadet program, and engage in other homeland security and counter-drug efforts.
“It is with great pride that I received this proclamation from Governor Mills in recognition of the Civil Air Patrol’s anniversary and our 83 years of service to the people of Maine,” said Maine Wing Commander Colonel Mark Hyland, CAP. “The ongoing support of Maine’s elected officials is critical to our overall success and ability to conduct and support our missions within the state. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the bonds between the Maine Wing and the Maine State House while we serve our communities, save lives, and change futures.”
Maine Wing Civil Air Patrol has ten squadrons throughout Maine that are open to new cadets ages 12-18 and adult members aged 18 and up. For more information on how to join Civil Air Patrol, visit gocivilairpatrol.com to learn more and find your local squadron.

Founded in 1941 and established as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force seven years later, Civil Air Patrol is chartered by Congress as a nonprofit organization for the purposes of youth development, aerospace education, and to promote general aviation. In an auxiliary role as a Total Force partner of the Air Force, CAP operates the world’s largest fleet of single-engine aircraft for search and rescue, disaster relief, training, and education. Civil Air Patrol is dedicated to serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures.
