Two vehicles crashed on Interstate 295 in Freeport on Monday morning.
The driver of a 2024 Toyota tried to merge from the right to the left lane on the southbound side of I-295, near mile marker 22, about 7:25 a.m. when they struck a 2018 Volkswagen, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
That caused the Volkswagen to strike the median guardrail, while the Toyota rolled onto its roof in the middle of the interstate, Moss said Monday.
The Toyota’s driver was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where they were treated for injuries not considered life-threatening. The Volkswagen’s driver complained of minor pain but declined to be taken to the hospital.
The crash caused heavy traffic, but drivers could get around the wreck by using the merging lane from the exit 22 onramp.
Neither driver was publicly identified.
No additional information was immediately available.
