The article in Friday’s Bangor Daily News about Leonard Leo, his supporters and critics, and the protesters against Leo at the MDI Marathon was particularly interesting to me, because I ran in the MDI Marathon and saw the protestors in person. I can’t speak for any other runners, but my immediate reaction was: “What ignorant hypocrites!”
Ignorant because they blame Leo for the overruling of Roe v. Wade, when he played a relatively small part. Ignorant because they don’t realize there have been more abortions per year after the overruling than before. Ignorant because they think pro-lifers oppose abortions after rape or to save the life of the mother, generally not true.
Hypocrites because the leftist protestors preach inclusivity, but are trying to force someone who disagrees with them to sell his house and move away. Hypocrites because they advocate free speech, but pressured a local college to disinvite a conservative speaker.
I’ve never met Mr. Leo and probably never will, but I suspect he’s accomplished more in his life than all the protesters combined. I hope he stays and continues to contribute to the state of Maine.
