University of Maine graduate student center and co-captain Lynden Breen will undergo surgery on Friday for an undisclosed leg injury he suffered in the third period of Saturday afternoon’s 6-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Breen will be sidelined for an “undetermined period of time,” according to UMaine sports information specialist Katie Peverada.
Attempts to reach Breen on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Breen had his first career hat trick in the win and also had an assist and was named the Hockey East Co-Player of the Week.
He was taken to a local hospital after the game for evaluation and attended Sunday’s 6-2 victory over RPI on crutches.
Breen has five goals and four assists in 11 games this season and has a three-game points streak in which he has tallied four goals and three assists.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Breen, a native of St. John, New Brunswick, is tied for 42nd on the school’s all-time scoring list with Derek Damon with 111 points.
Breen has scored 47 goals and assisted on 64 others in 135 games.
Breen, who was a captain last season and an alternate captain two years ago, was the team’s third-leading scorer last season behind the Nadeau brothers, Bradly and Josh, when he had nine goals and a career-high 21 assists for 30 points in 37 games.
He led the team in scoring in 2022-23 and ‘21-22.
He had 21 goals and 15 assists in 36 games two years ago and was an All-Hockey East second team selection. He led the country in shorthanded goals with four.
His sophomore year, he notched nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 33 games.
Breen tied for second in scoring on the team during his abbreviated 16-game freshman campaign when he had three goals and eight assists in 16 games.
