Outrage at the president’s pardon for his son has been expressed by conservative Republicans, liberal Democrats and columnists in the New York Times. Joe Biden said that he wouldn’t, and he did; he lied. Of course he lied! his enemies say. How could he do this, his supporters wonder. However, the reason seems relatively simple; President Biden changed his mind. And I think his decision was both courageous and honorable.
Since the November elections, Donald Trump and his prospective administration have made repeated threats to prosecute those they claim to be tied to “the Biden Crime Family.” I believe that Trump has falsely accused President Biden of militarizing the Justice Department and FBI so that he could justify doing it himself. Trump’s nominees for the Justice Department make his threats palpable and urgent, and many Republican leaders in Congress apparently now fully support this apparent assault on justice.
President Biden has taken a pre-emptive step to protect his son from becoming a target for the Trump Administration’s threats of injustice. Biden has protected his son from being threatened to be one of Donald Trump’s prominent “enemies within.” Biden has done what a good leader does. He has done what a good man does.
