Matty Healy came to Charli XCX’s defense after Azealia Banks had some not so nice words about the Brat singer’s appearance.
“Azealia you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to your ‘reads’. All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people,” the 1975 frontman, 35, wrote via X on Tuesday, December 3. “I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.”
Healy was responding to a comment Banks, 33, made about how Charli XCX’s look has changed since her breakout year in 2014.
“Charli used to be soooo pretty. Ugh,” the rapper penned on Tuesday alongside a clip of Charli XCX’s “Break the Rules” music video. “Boaaa, I swear them Weho gays be having the girls questioning themselves meanwhile they all scraping k off a cookie sheet, eating cold bossanova and sharing panties. Tuh.”
Charli XCX Defends ‘Brother’ Matty Healy’s Onstage Controversies
Healy wasn’t the only one to come to Charli XCX’s aid as many fans clapped back at Banks.
“She still is very very pretty, Miss Banks. So do you,” one user retorted while another replied, “Yeah she used to be pretty but she is even more gorgeous now.”
Charli XCX has not addressed Banks’ remarks. Us Weekly has reached out for comment.
Healy and Charli XCX, 32, have formed a unique friendship over the years. The “360” singer is engaged to Healy’s bandmate, George Daniel, who plays drums for The 1975. Daniel, 34, proposed to Charli XCX in November 2023 after a year of dating.
Earlier this year, Charli XCX opened up about how she sees Healy as like a “brother now.”
“I hope he wouldn’t mind me saying this,” the pop star said in an October interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe. “I have an endless amount of respect for him as a songwriter and him as a person.”
While Charli XCX has a lot of love for Healy, she joked that she “sometimes” wants “to strangle him.”
Charli XCX turned to her fiancé and Healy’s band to collaborate with her on a remix of her song “I Might Say Something Stupid.” She explained that she wanted to work with the band not just because of her personal connection to them but also because she respects them all as artists.
Azealia Banks Slams Taylor Swift’s Romance With ‘Incel’ Matty Healy
“I really wanted him to do the song,” she reflected. “Even before being with George — years and years ago — I’ve always been such a fan of [The 1975’s] work … I just really enjoy people who take a risk in terms of what they’re putting out there artistically.”
In addition to their 1975 connection, Healy and Charli XCX also have a history with Taylor Swift. Charli XCX previously opened for Swift, 34, on her 2018 Reputation tour. Meanwhile, Healy dated the pop star in spring 2023 after her split from Joe Alwyn.
On Brat, Charli XCX dropped the track “Sympathy Is a Knife,” which was rumored to be about Swift after the pair crossed paths backstage at 1975 shows. However, Charli XCX has denied that the song is about the pair’s dynamic.
Fans Think Charli XCX References Taylor Swift and Matty Healy in New Song
“People are gonna think what they want to think,” she said to New York magazine in August. “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”
Swift, for her part, has gushed about Charli XCX’s artistry.
“I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011,” Swift said to Vulture in August. “Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade.”
