The University of Maine president has been named to the board of the National Science Foundation.
Joan Ferrini-Mundy was sworn in Wednesday to the National Science Board, which governs the U.S. National Science Foundation, according to the university.
The board’s chair, Dario Gil, administered the oath to Ferrini-Mundy during the board’s two-day December meeting.
President Joe Biden appointed Ferrini-Mundy to the board in October for a six-year term. She is one of 25 board members who are responsible for advising the president and Congress on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) policies and programs.
On the board, Ferrini-Mundy will help shape the National Science Foundation’s direction, oversee its budget and evaluate research initiatives. The foundation received $9.06 billion in congressional appropriations during the 2024 fiscal year.
Ferrini-Mundy named the 21st president of UMaine in 2018, succeeding Susan Hunter. She also oversees the UMaine at Machias campus. Before coming to UMaine, Ferrini-Mundy served as the chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation.
