Police have identified the Camden woman who died Wednesday morning after a vehicle struck her while she was operating a wheelchair.
Michelle Bishop, 62, was riding the motorized wheelchair in the eastbound lane of John Street when she was struck by a minivan operated by Robert Spencer, 82, of Camden, according to the local police department. She was thrown out of the wheelchair and died from her injuries.
The crash was reported at 8:19 a.m.
Police said Spencer’s vision was obstructed by the sun and that he couldn’t see Bishop when the crash happened.
Bishop was riding in the street because there are no sidewalks in that area, according to the Midcoast Villager.
Rescue workers spent 45 minutes unsuccessfully trying to resuscitate Bishop.
