Maine police have not been able to confirm recent reports of potentially suspicious drone activity over parts of the state.
Members of the public have been on high alert for the past few days after reports of mysterious drone activity came out of New Jersey and other parts of the northeast. While dozens of people reported seeing the drone activity over New Jersey, authorities including the FBI have not identified the drone operators.
The Pentagon insists the drones do not represent a threat from abroad, according to an Associated Press report.
While some social media users have reported seeing what appear to be drones over the Augusta area, the city’s police department has not received any reports of illicit drone operations, the department confirmed Sunday morning.
The office noted that any drone activity in the Augusta area would be detected by pilots flying in and out of the Augusta airport, but that no concerns had been reported, although the office fully intends to investigate any future reports if necessary.
State police are also unaware of any illicit drone activity, according to Lt. Aaron Turcotte.
An email to the New England office of the Federal Aviation Administration was not immediately returned on Sunday.
Drone sightings have been reported by a number of Facebook users, ranging from the southwest to the northeast regions of the state. It is not clear whether those drones were registered and operated under the proper guidelines.
Anyone is allowed to fly a drone in Maine airspace, as long as they adhere to regulations set forth by the FAA.
