Work is officially underway on a new child care facility for Bath Iron Works employees.
BIW and the YMCA held a ceremony Monday for the beginning of work on a child care center.
It will be at 6 Farley Road near Cook’s Corner in Brunswick.
The new facility will create about 100 child care spots for BIW shipbuilders.
BIW and the YMCA hope the new center will help with hiring and retaining workers facing child care challenges.
“When families can’t work, it has catastrophic effects on our local economy and our state economy,” Bath Area Family YMCA Chief Executive Officer Rob Gray said. “And so this is a vital part of a successful community and a vital part of helping our families become financially stable.”
The facility will also have some spaces open for children within the community whose parents are not BIW employees.
