A former Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy is accused of stealing more than $10,000 in property from three people.
Brian Smith, 37, of Poland was indicted this week by a grand jury on charges of theft by unauthorized taking and burglary, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Smith allegedly stole more than $10,000 in property from the victims between Jan. 4 and June 27. He’s also accused of entering one of the victim’s homes with the intent to steal on Jan. 8, the Press Herald reported.
Smith resigned from the sheriff’s office, where he had served for nine years, on Aug. 1.
His resignation came weeks after he was charged with domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly fired a gun within five feet of someone in the backyard of his home in Poland, according to the Press Herald.
Prosecutors in Androscoggin County dropped that charge in September for lack of evidence, the newspaper reported.
The Maine attorney general’s office is prosecuting the latest charges.
