Most of the luxury homes on the Maine market are clustered along the coast. But there are a slew of ritzy properties in farther-flung places as well.
We rounded up some of the priciest properties for sale in rural areas of Maine right now, stretching from the western mountains to the midcoast foothills.
A rural mountainside lodge: $2.3 million
This 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom home sits in a clearing on the edge of a mountain in the rural western Maine town of Sweden, offering views of Kezar Pond and the White Mountains.
It includes 68 private acres of forest, a gun range and a separate apartment ideal for an in-law or for generating rental income, according to its online listing. The lodge itself also has a gourmet kitchen, multiple decks, a jacuzzi, sauna and arcade room, the listing says, as well as a whole-home generator and energy-efficient features.
The property, listed by Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, is currently operated as a holiday rental. It’s a short drive from the towns of Bridgton and Fryburg, and about 30 minutes from the New Hampshire border. Thousands of miles of snowmobile and ATV trails are directly accessible from the property, according to its listing. It’s being sold turn-key.
This lakeside compound in Newport: $3.85 million
A compound on Barrows Point Road in Newport boasts six bedrooms and seven bathrooms across main and guest houses. The estate includes multiple decks overlooking Sebasticook Lake, and multiple docks from which to enjoy the property’s more than 1,000 feet of water frontage, according to its online listing.
The big price includes docks and watercraft, the listing says. The property, listed by Trundy & Company Real Estate, is a couple minutes from Newport’s town center and roughly 30 minutes in either direction from Bangor or Waterville.
A riverside farmhouse on the midcoast: $2.95 million
This 7-bedroom, 6-bathroom farmhouse is for sale in the rural, midcoast town of Appleton, sitting on a nearly 43-acre lot with almost 1,300 feet of frontage along the Saint George River.
It includes three wood-burning fireplaces, a large deck and was recently renovated from top to bottom, though it has been in the same family for nearly a century, according to its online listing.
Included with the property is a two-story barn, which is heated and air conditioned, a large garage, an orchard and hay fields leading down to the river, the listing says. The property, listed by Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, is being sold with the tractors and farm equipment necessary to maintain it.
A western Maine chalet: $2.3 million
This stately 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom chalet on nearly 28 acres in Lovell has a commanding view of the western Maine mountains. The home, listed by EXP Realty, was only built in 2007 but includes a heated drive-in barn that was built in 1810, according to its online listing. The barn is ideal for entertaining or it could be used as an equestrian property, the listing says.
The home’s attractive features include cathedral ceilings, oak and cherry hardwood floors and a home gym. Despite its rural location, the chalet is a 25 minute drive from Fryeburg and the New Hampshire border. It’s also near recreational hotspots, including Kezar Pond and the Sunday River ski resort.
