According to Albert M. Greenfield, “A man doesn’t need brilliance or genius, all he needs is energy.” This quote highlights how vital energy is in our lives. My name is Cole, and as a student at King Middle School in Portland, Maine, I’ve been learning about energy and climate change. I firmly believe that to combat climate change, we must adopt sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar, and nuclear.
First, Maine should prioritize wind energy. It’s a renewable resource that will always be available. Wind turbines can be installed in open areas, including offshore, making them space-efficient. Additionally, wind energy is affordable and easier to maintain than nuclear or oil.
Next is solar energy. Like wind, it is renewable and relies on the sun. While solar panels can take up considerable space, their energy output is substantial, covering 5.6 percent of the energy used in the U.S. Moreover, they are easier to produce than oil or natural gas drilling equipment.
Lastly, nuclear energy, though non-renewable, is incredibly efficient. One pound of uranium produces energy equivalent to about three million pounds of coal. Its radioactive elements can last up to 4.5 billion years, providing long-term energy. Importantly, uranium can be recycled for further energy production.
In conclusion, wind, solar, and nuclear energy are crucial for achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral future. We must urgently transition from fossil fuels to these energy sources to combat climate change and protect our environment.
