Imagine this, a small girl only six years of age, forced to move away from her familiar home due to flooding. Her family might not know where they will live or how they will be able to provide for her. Believe it or not, similar occurrences are happening throughout our world due to global warming. People are relocating with little to no choice as to when or where they will move. As heartbreaking as this seems, we can not just suppress these thoughts and incidents hoping they will go away. We need to rise and work together to save our planet. My name is Eliana. I attend King Middle School in Portland, Maine. We have been reading, debating, and learning about energy sources. I believe Nuclear power is the leading option for a sustainable energy source that Maine should use to reduce our carbon footprint.
Nuclear does not emit any greenhouse gasses while operating, therefore, it is not contributing to climate change. Additionally, upon reading many articles, I discovered that to a large number of people, Nuclear power seems unsafe and scary. I understand why, in the past, nuclear disasters have occurred leading to devastating situations. However the risk of a nuclear disaster occurring in the U.S. is very limited because we have many safety systems present in nuclear power plants that are updated and working. If we can rewire people’s brains to understand that nuclear energy is not as dangerous as it seems we can move to a carbon-neutral future.
