Stockton Springs selectmen voted on Monday to fire their town manager of just over three years.
Town manager Mac Smith confirmed Tuesday morning that rumors of his termination circulating on social media were true. He said no reason was provided to him nor the public for his termination, which followed a conflict with selectmen that he declined to elaborate on.
“It breaks my heart to leave,” Smith said. “This crew is wonderful, I’m honored and lucky to be a part of it.”
Selectman Betsy Bradley declined to comment on Smith’s allegation of a conflict other than to say the board was aware of it and has chosen to go in a different direction.
The select board will go through the standard hiring process, Bradley said. There will be a meeting on Thursday in which the board will draw up their own advertisement for the positions of interim as well as a permanent town manager.
Smith, a Navy veteran, former reporter and author, was the interim town manager before he was appointed to the position in 2021.
