A Bar Harbor fisherman will spend years behind bars for the brutal assault and attempted murder of a co-worker in 2023.
Justice Harold Stewart handed down the sentence against 30-year-old Dimitry Dubrovsky at the Hancock County courthouse on Monday. Dubrovsky was sentenced to 25 years in prison with all but 15 years suspended, as well as four years of supervised release, according to the Ellsworth American.
Police were called to a Stolt Road residence in Lamoine about 9:57 p.m. on July 14, 2023, after someone called 911 to report an altercation, gunshots and several people leaving the scene.
When police arrived, they couldn’t immediately find the suspects or a victim. After receiving a tip from a 911 caller, police located Spencer Trott, who was staying at the Stolt Road residence, walking down Bayside Road in Ellsworth.
District Attorney Bob Granger told the court on Monday that Dubrovsky shot Trott, now 39, in the head and then pistol whipped him 25 to 30 times before dragging Trott into the back of a truck and driving him to a remote location to dump him, according to The American.
Trott survived by diving into the water off Bayside Road and didn’t emerge until Dubrovsky and 30-year-old Duncan Haass of Lamoine left. He then hid in an old shed for three hours before looking for help, the newspaper reported.
Police arrested Dubrovsky and Haass on July 15, 2023. They were charged with attempted murder.
“It is only by the grace of God that we’re not here for a homicide,” The American quoted Justice Stewart as saying Monday.
The state’s case against Haass is still pending.
It’s not the first case against Dubrovsky for acts of violence. In August 2021, he was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and reckless conduct with a firearm after he shot another vehicle on Route 184 in Lamoine in what police called an act of road rage.
