CUMBERLAND, Maine — Cumberland police are investigating a cyber security breach that recently affected MSAD 51.
The MSAD 51 superintendent says over the weekend a student’s email account was hacked in an attempted phishing case by an unknown user from outside the U.S., an event similar to an attack around the same time in South Portland schools that came from Bulgaria.
The superintendent says an unauthorized email was sent to 1,400 MSAD 51 school accounts, which included both teacher and student accounts, using the student’s school Gmail address.
The email included a link about a remote job offer, requested a phone number and ask that replies be sent from a private email account.
The police department has opened an investigation into the potential threat.
