TOPSHAM, Maine — Mt. Ararat High School is suspending its boys hockey team’s activities in the wake of a bullying investigation.
In a letter, MSAD 75 Superintendent Heidi O’Leary says the game scheduled for Wednesday night against Gorham has been canceled.
According to the Press Herald, practices were also canceled on Tuesday, as the school began an “investigation in line with district policies and procedures.”
“The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority. We are eager to return our team to the ice when we are able We continue to appreciate your patience and understanding, as well as your respect for this process and the confidentially of those involved,” O’Leary said in a letter to parents.
O’Leary said she was unable to provide specific details about the alleged bullying due to confidentiality laws.
Mt. Ararat’s co-op hockey team also includes students from Lisbon and Morse high schools.
Lisbon made headlines last fall for a hazing scandal involving Lisbon High School’s football team. Following an investigation, no charges were filed.
However, a report released by lawyers from the law firm Drummond Woodsum found the team had a “culture of hazing and roughhousing.”
