A former Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges.
Brian Smith is accused of stealing thousands of dollars in property from multiple victims last year.
Smith allegedly took “unauthorized control” over the property of three victims from Gray between Jan. 8, 2024, and June 27, 2024, which had an aggregate value of more than $10,000.
The indictment also alleges that on Jan. 9, 2024, Smith entered the home of one of the victims “with the intent to commit the crime of theft.”
Smith, a former sergeant with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, resigned from the agency in August 2024 amid an internal affairs investigation into his conduct, according to Sheriff Kevin Joyce.
It’s still unclear what relationship Smith may have had with the alleged victims and if the alleged crimes were committed while Smith was in his official role as a law enforcement officer.
Smith pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday to theft by unauthorized taking and burglary. Both are Class B felonies.
In July 2024, Smith also faced multiple charges, including domestic violence and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, in connection with an incident in Poland. Court documents show those charges were dropped in September 2024 due to “insufficient evidence.”
