A Buxton man has been arrested in the December shooting outside a South Portland sushi restaurant.
Jonathan Hanson, 21, has been charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, felony; criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a felony; criminal mischief, a misdemeanor; and terrorizing, a misdemeanor, according to Shara Dee, a spokesperson for the city of South Portland.
Two groups got into an altercation inside Kobe Steakhouse on Gorham Road, near the Maine Mall, on Dec. 18, 2024.
That altercation then moved into the parking lot, where a suspect from one of the groups displayed a gun and threatened the other group.
The victims then fled in a vehicle, but they were followed by a blue Dodge Charger. When they reached the intersection of Gorham Road and Western Avenue, a suspect allegedly fired the gun toward the victims’ vehicle, hitting it, before fleeing onto Western Avenue, police said at the time.
No one was hit by gunfire.
Police later identified Hanson and Navinn Ean as suspects in the shooting.
The Dodge Charger was found at a Right Way residence in Naples on Dec. 23. A regional SWAT team, Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies and South Portland detectives descended on the property about 11 p.m. that day. But even though the vehicle was found, neither Hanson nor Ean was there, Dee said Wednesday night.
Then, on Tuesday evening, Buxton police attempted to pull over a pickup truck for a traffic offense, but the driver sped away. Police later tracked the vehicle down to a Haines Meadow Road residence in Buxton.
Both the pickup truck and that residence had known ties to the South Portland shooting, according to Dee.
Police then learned that Hanson, who had a warrant for his arrest in the shooting, was inside the home. Hanson ultimately surrendered to police about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Hanson was arraigned Wednesday. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on $10,000 bail.
Ean remains at large.
The shooting remains under investigation.
