Ashland police have arrested a woman on three counts of animal cruelty after they found several neglected dogs at a home vacated in September.
Miranda Burby, 38, of Ashland was arrested on Jan. 8 and will face the charges at Presque Isle District Court in March, Ashland Police Chief Christopher Cyr said Wednesday in a press release.
Local officers worked with Maine animal humane agents to search a Fenderson Road home, where several dogs were reportedly abandoned.
Police discovered three dogs living in their own waste, without food or water.
“The residence did not have heat or electricity, resulting in the animals enduring subzero temperatures and darkness for an extended period of time,” Cyr said.
Investigators learned Burby had moved out of the home in September, after the power had been disconnected, and left the dogs behind, he said.
The dogs were brought to Presque Isle for medical treatment and then brought to the Central Aroostook Humane Society animal shelter in Presque Isle for care.
No further information was immediately available.
