SOUTH PORTLAND — The Axe Pit and Maine Warrior Gym in South Portland faced a major challenge in 2024 when a fire broke out on Sept. 30 due to electrical wiring issues in a renovation site. Thanks to the building’s sprinkler system, the fire was quickly contained. However, significant water and smoke damage disrupted operations and created setbacks for both The Axe Pit and Maine Warrior Gym, both businesses owned by Tim Johnson.
In the months since, the community’s unwavering support and the team’s resilience and elbow grease have helped turn a difficult year into a story of triumph. As repairs progress, The Axe Pit is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its brand-new taproom and beer garden on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 6–10 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with axe throwing lanes open, ongoing lessons throughout the evening to ensure everyone has a chance to throw a few axes.
A year of resilience and growth
Reflecting on the fire and its aftermath, Johnson expressed deep gratitude for the tireless efforts of his staff and the incredible outpouring of support from the South Portland community.
“The staff has been amazing, stepping up when we needed them most to help dismantle equipment, manage cleanup, and keep things moving forward,” Johnson shared. “The support from our customers and neighbors has been equally inspiring. This year hasn’t been easy, but together, we’ve overcome these challenges and come out stronger than ever.”
The new taproom: a vision realized
The new taproom and beer garden marks a major milestone for The Axe Pit, combining axe throwing with a relaxed, social atmosphere where visitors can enjoy locally crafted brews and cocktails made from local spirits. The outdoor beer garden offers a welcoming space for customers to unwind, making The Axe Pit not just an activity destination but also a hub for community connection.
“We’ve always dreamed of expanding what we offer to our guests,” Johnson explained. “This Taproom represents the resilience and passion of our team and community. It’s a place for people to come together, have fun, and enjoy the best of what South Portland has to offer.”
