An Ellsworth man who was badly burned last week in a fire at a local apartment complex remains hospitalized, according to a state official.
The man, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition, Shannon Moss, spokesperson for Maine Department of Public Safety, said Friday.
The man lived at the Meadow View Apartment complex, near the intersection of Maddocks Avenue and East Main Street. The subsidized housing facility serves people 62 and older, as well as disabled people of any age, according to its website.
The man was found just inside the door of his burning apartment when firefighters arrived and entered the unit, the local fire chief said at the time of the Jan. 22 blaze.
He suffered life-threatening burns and was taken first by ambulance to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, the state fire marshal’s office has said.
Meadow View Apartments has more than 80 units, most of which are in separate, single-story buildings with four units each. The fire occurred in one of the four-unit buildings, displacing three other residents who lived in the same building.
The fire marshal’s office said the cause of the fire was “careless disposal of smoking material” and that the building where it occurred is salvageable.
Moss said no charges are expected to be filed in the case.
